Thebes ( Arabic: طيبة, Ancient Greek: Θῆβαι, Thēbai ), known to the ancient Egyptians as Waset, was an ancient Egyptian city located along the Nile about 800 kilometers (500 mi) south of the Mediterranean. Deir el-Bahari or Dayr al-Bahri ( Arabic: الدير البحري, romanized : al-Dayr al-Baḥrī, lit. Thebes remained the capital of Egypt until the end of the Middle Kingdom. It was once a bustling hub and a place of religious and political significance. Thebes is perhaps one of the most renowned cities of ancient Egypt.
